I continue to do my random acts of kindness. Every week, I purchase flowers for my kitchen table. I always purchase a bunch to give to the person in line behind me. Yesterday, I gave flowers to a lady and she asked if it was a special occasion. I told her no, I just enjoy flowers. She thanked me very much.
This morning, I did a different act of kindness. Our weather in Georgia is quite humid and hot (and the REAL heat hasn't even started yet). Today, is sanitation pick up day for a lot of people in the neighborhood. I have tons of soft drinks in my fridge and thought that the driver and his crew might enjoy a cold drink. I'm sure they have coolers and water already, but I just wanted to do something for them.
It brought back a funny memory. My grandfather talked to everyone in his broken English. Even if you could not understand him, you could see the kindness in his eyes. Both of my parents worked and Papa stayed at home with us. Mom comes home one day from work, and the sanitation workers are sitting at the table with papa having a cup of coffee.
Mom, or course, knew that she couldn't tell papa anything... he had his own mind. I'm sure she encouraged (putting it mildly) my dad to tell him in Greek that this is not ok. Sure, it's fine to take them a drink, but they a job to do and should not be having a coffee break. I'm sure he probably fed them lunch or some food too. He owned a restaurant at one time, and he fed everyone that was hungry.
